Dear MoveOn member,

On November 19, 2011, my father, 68-year-old Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., was shot and killed in his home in White Plains, New York.

My father was a 20-year veteran of the Westchester County Department of Corrections and proudly served the United States of America as a Marine. He stood about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and he suffered from a heart condition.

The events that led to his killing began around 5 a.m., when his medical alert device was accidentally set off, sending a call to the City of White Plains Department of Public Safety. Everything that happened after that was recorded by an audio device installed in my father's home as part of his medical alert system.

When the police arrived at my father's home, he and the staff for his medical alert service told them that there was no medical emergency and asked them to leave. And yet they insisted that my father let them into his home, banging loudly on my father's door for over an hour. On the recording, the police can be heard calling my father a "nigger."

Ultimately they broke through his apartment door and first shot him with a Taser. He was wearing nothing but boxer shorts when the police began their assault against him. Shortly after that, he was shot with two 40-caliber rounds and killed.

My family is asking the Westchester County District Attorney to bring a criminal indictment, and we call on the United States Department of Justice or the New York State Attorney General to prosecute this as a hate crime.

The petition says:

This petition is regarding the upcoming grand jury hearing in the case of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an unarmed elderly black citizen who was shot to death by the White Plains Police Department. 

This case not only brings into question the policies and practices of this department; but it is an open question whether it was inevitable, particularly in light of the audio tapes and video tapes witnessed by Mr. Chamberlain's family members and attorneys where racial slurs and expletives were used before ultimately shooting him twice in the chest and killing him. 

It is imperative that those tapes be made available to the grand jury, and that all other evidence be presented as well. I am concerned that secrecy so far—for example, the names of officers involved have not been released—bodes badly for transparency in this case as it moves forward. Nor am I aware of any public statements about the case from elected officials calling for openness. 

Members of Mr. Chamberlain's family and community—and a much wider circle of people who need to know there is fairness in the criminal justice system—seek reassurance that, no matter what the verdict, the process has been open, honest, and just. 

We, the undersigned, implore Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore to no longer allow police misconduct, brutality, or criminality to happen in this community and ask that these officers be indicted and charged with murder and civil rights violations.

That got Representative Bobby Rush thrown out on Wednesday, even as he quoted from the Bible on justice and the end of oppression.¹

Rep. Rush is one of millions calling for justice for Trayvon Martin, a young black man in a hoodie, gunned down last month in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon's killer, George Zimmerman, still hasn't been arrested—and the wheels of justice can't turn until he is.

Tomorrow in Sanford, MoveOn members will join Trayvon's family, the NAACP, SEIU, and other allies in a march for justice. And across the country, we can show our solidarity with Saturday's march by taking a picture of ourselves with a hoodie and making it our profile picture on Facebook and Twitter.

This campaign began with a cry for justice from Trayvon's parents, and grew online through huge petitions (including one by MoveOn member Maria Roach) and a massive response on social media from celebrities and millions of everyday people standing against racism and racial profiling. So, while Trayvon's family keeps the pressure on in the streets of Sanford, we need to keep up the pressure online, where this campaign grew into a national movement.

Starbucks stuck its neck out to publicly support the right of all people to marry, regardless of the gender of their partner.

Now it is under attack by the ironically named, ultra-conservative "National Organization for Marriage."¹ Already more than 20,000 NOM members have pledged to boycott Starbucks, and NOM is even threatening to run ads against Starbucks in 55 countries.

Let's blow the right wing out of the water by getting more than ten times as many consumers to thank Starbucks for standing up for gay marriage.

Join us in showing our support for Starbucks by signing our giant Thank You card. If 200,000 of us sign it, we'll deliver it to Starbucks executives to give them moral support to keep standing up for equality.

NOM is targeting Starbucks because the company recently stood up publicly to support gay marriage legislation in their home state of Washington.² When it passed, the bill's lead sponsor said that support from business convinced moderate legislators to vote for it. Without support from companies like Starbucks, the gay marriage law might have failed.³

Now, if Starbucks backtracks because of opposition, then it will set the gay rights struggle back to a time when big corporations couldn't come out and support gay people for fear of public backlash. Even worse, it will embolden anti-gay activists to target other companies that support gay rights, and serve as a lesson to other companies to stay out of the fight for equal rights entirely.

Starbucks isn't perfect—and in the future we'll probably be asking them to improve their policies on other issues. But it's a big deal when a giant multinational corporation with no particular connection to the gay community realizes that there are real business benefits—from better employees to happier customers—to standing up for progressive ideals. And we can't just criticize corporations when they do bad. We also want to encourage them when they do good.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I'm a MoveOn member and a mother, and my two sons look like Trayvon Martin.

As parents, we all have to warn our children about the dangers of the world—strangers, bullies, which streets not to walk down. But there's a special pain in explaining to my sons the suspicion and dangers they face, simply by being young black men.

One month ago today, Trayvon Martin was walking through a gated community in Florida with nothing more than an iced tea and a bag of skittles. But being a young black man in a hoodie made him "suspicious" to George Zimmerman, who got out of his SUV, tracked Trayvon down, and shot him dead.¹

On that terrible day, my special pain and fear as a parent became very urgent ... and very real. Racial profiling is a sickness in the soul of our nation. It limits our promise. It divides us. And one month ago, it robbed Trayvon Martin of his life.

Trayvon's story is already inspiring millions in the call for justice and an end to racial violence. It also moved writer/activist Kevin Powell, Akila Worksongs, Jasiri X and the folks at MoveOn and ColorOfChange to record a new powerful video "A Song for Trayvon." Please watch it and share it with your family and friends to inspire more people to join this growing movement:

When my husband shared the news about Trayvon, my eyes welled with tears. I pictured my own two boys innocently walking home, just like Trayvon, and then never seeing them again—never hugging them. It was more than I could bear.

That's why I started a SignOn petition calling for justice for Trayvon. It's been signed by more than 500,000 MoveOn members, and I'm delivering it to the Justice Department today. Already, the public pressure from us and our allies is making a difference.

The Justice Department, the State of Florida, and the FBI have launched new investigations, a new state prosecutor has been appointed, and a grand jury date has been set.² But we need to keep building the call for justice. 142. That's how many national advertisers have dropped the Rush Limbaugh show. Last week the show was dealt a heavy blow when its syndication company, Premiere Radio Networks, announced that more than 96 companies specifically requested that their ads not run during Rush Limbaugh—leading Premiere to suspend all national advertising on the show for two weeks.¹

The loss of so much national ad revenue means that local radio stations that broadcast Rush's show are really starting to feel the pressure. In fact over a hundred competing stations are putting on other conservative personalities at the same time slot to compete with Rush.²

That means it's incredibly important that the local stations that are still airing Rush's show hear from us right now, as they make decisions about the future of their programming.

They have to know that millions of women and men all over the country have not forgotten about Rush's vile and vicious attacks on Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke and do not want him on the air anymore. When someone uses their public platform to attack women, they need to be held accountable.

Rush Limbaugh—not surprisingly—has learned nothing from the controversy around his comments on Fluke. Last week he continued to make sexist comments—saying he was "God's gift" to women³ and proclaiming he could not possibly be anti-woman because he was once a judge for the Miss America pageant.⁴

Rush Limbaugh has a long history of misogynistic statements, making comments like "everybody knows it was the vacuum cleaner that liberated women more than the pill." And when Danica Patrick—a female NASCAR driver—supported the administration's decision on birth control Limbaugh said, "what do you expect from a woman driver?"⁵

But what he said about Sandra Fluke was beyond the pale. And everybody knows it. That's why advertisers are running for the door.

Calling a young woman a "slut," graphically describing what her sex life must be like and soliciting sex tapes on the air is unacceptable. And millions of people believe that any personality—even a "shock-jock"—should not be rewarded with fame and money for using that platform to abuse and attack women.

So far it's been on Hardball, The Last Word, CNN, ABC World News, and more.¹ Incredibly, it was even praised by a Fox News analyst on The O'Reilly Factor: "As a Republican, while I don't like it, I actually think it is a hard-hitting and will be a highly effective ad."²

Why is it effective? Because it shows American women the danger of a Republican victory for their health and rights. And even Bill O'Reilly knows "it is likely that American women will be the deciding factor in the presidential election."³ But our expert media buyers tell us it can only be effective if more people see it.

Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed while walking home from a convenience store on the evening of February 26. The shooter, George Zimmerman, was the neighborhood watch captain. Zimmerman, a 200-pound 28-year-old with a history of violence, claimed self defense, even though Trayvon Martin had no criminal history and nothing more than candy and an iced tea in his hands. 

It's a deep injustice that George Zimmerman remains free. That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, which says:

George Zimmerman's shooting of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager, reveals a history of racism in Sanford, Florida, that has stubbornly refused to die. Weeks after the shooting, the Sanford police department is slow to release details of the shooting and, more surprisingly, has not arrested George Zimmerman, a man who has a history of violence. 

We urge you to sign this petition to protect private citizens from gun violence and inept law enforcement. Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi must step in and provide justice for Trayvon Martin, his family, and the community.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

My name is Dave Moore, and I'm the new volunteer MoveOn Council Coordinator in Chicago.

Getting the president to fight hard for the middle class and working people like me is incredibly important. That's why I joined the Council and signed both MoveOn petitions calling on President Obama to veto any extension of the Bush tax cuts for the 1%.

We asked for it, and we got it. The Obama administration is now on the record saying that they won't extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.¹ Ending these giveaways is a critical first step to making sure that millionaires and billionaires start paying their fair share in 2013.

I delivered the signatures of 250,000 MoveOn members to the Obama reelection campaign headquarters in downtown Chicago to thank him for this commitment, and at the same time to ask him to oppose lowering the corporate tax rate.² 

We can make this veto commitment stick by showing the president that regular Americans support it. It'll convince him to keep fighting for the 99%, and it will show people the tremendous power we have when we take action together. So we've got to make sure that as many people as possible share this victory with their friends and family on huge social networks like Facebook.

We won this important victory, but this ain't over—not even close. The 1% have highly-paid lobbyists to rig the tax game in their favor. At the end of this year, they will fight tooth-and-nail to keep their elevated status, not caring who they step on. We've got to stand together to fight them back at every turn.

We need a tax plan for the 99%, not more tax giveaways to bankers and big corporations. So I'm gonna keep marching, signing and sharing petitions, and getting my friends and neighbors involved in campaigns to make sure everyone pays their fair share. I need you to do the same—for me, your fellow MoveOn members, and the whole country.

Spread the good news about the Bush tax cuts victory today. We have to share the victories we win, which will propel us to even bigger ones in the battles to come.

Share this progressive victory and inspire more people to be part of the next fight.

This work is important to me because so many systems in this country exist to take the work and wealth of the 99% and systematically funnel it to the very richest among us. If we don't stand up to them, we will see more and more inequality in our country. My hope is that others will join in the movement toward equality of rights and opportunity.

Rush Limbaugh's radio show is a part of the Clear Channel lineup, and it's time that they no longer allow Rush Limbaugh to spew hateful and derogatory comments. That's why I created a petition to Clear Channel on SignOn.org, which says:

Sandra Fluke, a law student at Georgetown University who was advocating for health insurance plans to cover the cost of contraception, became the target of a series of attacks by Rush Limbaugh. Besides calling her a "slut," he also called her a "prostitute," said that he wanted her to make sex tapes and post them online, and speculated that she only had a problem paying for contraception because she was having "so much sex." We who support Ms. Fluke find that this is a serious offense committed by Mr. Limbaugh, and we ask that his radio show be terminated.

Last year, massive nonviolent direct action transformed America—from the protests for workers' rights in Madison that took over the state capitol for nearly a month, to the 1,000 people who performed civil disobedience at the White House to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, to Occupy Wall Street, we changed the political debate.

But still, millions of jobs have been destroyed, millions of homes foreclosed on, and an unconscionable number of children live in poverty. We have to do more to fix America, and we all know it. That's why people from across the 99% movement are preparing to take action this spring in bigger numbers than ever before to fight for change.

To prepare for the 99% Spring, groups from every corner of our movement are joining forces to do something that's never been tried before. During the week of April 9-15, across America, we will bring 100,000 people together for an unprecedented national movement-wide training on what happened to our economy, on the history of peaceful direct action, and how—following in the footsteps of Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—we can take direct action this spring to challenge corporate power, end tax giveaways to the 1%, fight the influence of money in politics, and more.

But so far no one in your city has stepped up to coordinate a training. Can you sign up to host a local 99% Spring action training?

Anyone can host a training—you can host just a handful of people in your living room or you can find a local community center, place of worship, campus, or public space and put together a larger event. From the seamstress in Alabama who launched a bus boycott to the women in New York who dreamed they could one day speak with an equal voice to the mother who spoke up in Love Canal to stop the poisoning of her community, the power of nonviolent direct action has been essential in the great movements for social change in our country and around the world.

Right now our country needs a whole lot more of that spirit, because we need change on that scale again. The 99% Spring is our chance to step into the great tradition of creating lasting systemic change through nonviolent direct action—but it will only work if a huge number of us prepare ourselves and join in.

Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe announced this week that she is abruptly abandoning her reelection bid.¹

This is huge! It significantly improves Democrats' chances of holding on to the Senate this fall. Even better, it's a tremendous opportunity to send a progressive champion to the Senate—Congresswoman Chellie Pingree. 2012 can truly can be the year of the strong progressive woman with Chellie joining Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin to run for the Senate.

Why should we be excited about Chellie? Quite simply, she kicks butt like few people in Washington do. Since being elected to Congress with MoveOn members' support, she has organized other members of Congress to fight for a health care public option and to defend the Clean Air Act.² Before that she was the director of Common Cause, a leading group working to get big money out of politics.³ 

A number of candidates may run, but Chellie would be by far the best: think Elizabeth Warren or Paul Wellstone. She's leaning yes but has only a few days to decide.

We need to demonstrate right now that Chellie is the clear progressive choice for Maine and that MoveOn members will have her back. The best way to do that is to pledge to give Chellie whatever you can afford to support her campaign, so we can make her the instant front-runner in the race.

Dear MoveOn member,

President Obama could help twelve million homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage.¹

But the president needs to hear directly from us.

Here's the story: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac hold 60% of mortgages—but the agency that oversees them is run by Bush appointee Ed DeMarco who refuses to allow underwater homeowners to adjust their mortgages to reflect the true value of their home.²

Homeowners are struggling to make ends meet. And helping them not only means saving their homes, it will also stabilize the market and help get the economy back on track for everyone.

President Obama has the power to replace DeMarco and make sure Fannie and Freddie provide relief to the millions of Americans struggling with mortgage debt.

That's why on Thursday, March 15—the same day the Senate banking committee meets in D.C. to discuss the fate of homeowners—we're organizing big rallies at Obama for America campaign offices around the country. We'll tell the president: We're sinking in underwater mortgages—throw the 99% a lifeline to keep us in our homes. Dear MoveOn member,

Did you hear? Barack Obama's a socialist food-stamp president waging a war on religion. He's also a secret Muslim who wants to turn America into Europe. And don't forget the death panels.

That's the kind of junk you can hear every day on Fox News and the rest of the right-wing media. And after Citizens United, Republican Super PACs will have unlimited corporate money to create an even bigger tidal wave of misinformation.

Make no mistake—the threat we face this election season isn't just Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum. It's the massive amounts of secret corporate money that will be spent on false, negative ads attacking President Obama and every other progressive candidate.

But we've got a plan to fight back. Over the last year we've been quietly developing a groundbreaking plan to counter these lies through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter—where millions of people now get their news, bypassing the corporate media.

The results so far have been amazing. There have been 65 million views (!) in the last year. We increased our web traffic tenfold. And we tripled our audience of Facebook fans who can spread the word. But to counter Fox's lies this election, we need to raise $200,000 to pay for the researchers, editors, and developers necessary to ramp up.

Here's an example of how it works: Just a couple weeks ago, President Obama announced his new policy to make sure all women have access to contraception. Republicans fought back, trying to frame Obama's position as somehow an attack on religious liberty.

Then, that famous picture came out of the men-only panel discussing women's contraception before Congress. MoveOn, along with our allies, pushed it out on Facebook and Twitter, and pretty soon it was everywhere. Almost instantly, that one photo changed way the debate was framed and put the Republicans on defense. 

That's how we can beat Fox and win the message war. So here's the plan going forward: Every day, a team of 50 MoveOn volunteer editors will collect the most timely and persuasive progressive news and opinion from around the web. Graphics debunking Republican lies about the economy. Live video coverage of the Occupy movement. Inspiring footage of progressive heroes. And much more.

Then we'll push the most timely and persuasive stuff out to hundreds of thousands of people, who share it with millions more.

We believe that people-powered media, funded by people like us, can be a secret weapon against the conservative noise machine. But we need to raise enough to expand our ability to find, produce, and test terrific content. Can you chip in $5?
